When you start thinking about a home renovation, you probably picture the finished space: a kitchen that works better, a bathroom you love, or an addition that gives your family room to grow.
I want you to picture a Tuesday morning during construction, too.
The electrician needs to know where a light should go. A fixture hasn’t arrived. The contractor needs a decision before work can continue. And behind a wall, you’ve found something nobody expected.
Those moments are part of renovation. And that’s why project management matters so much. Good project management keeps design decisions, deliveries and construction details moving together.
Home renovation is a sequence of interdependent decisions, and working in the construction, I often see how one decision leads to another.
The floor plan affects the electrical plan.
The furniture layout can affect lighting locations.
The cabinetry affects plumbing and appliances.
The countertop affects fabrication schedules.
The tile affects installation details.
If one item arrives late, and the whole schedule may need to change before the construction can keep moving again.
Contractors, electricians, plumbers, cabinetmakers, installers and craftspeople – each of them bring important skills and valuable expertise to a project. But during a renovation, someone also needs to keep track of how their work fits together with the overall design.

At ASR Interior Designs, I start thinking about the construction process while we’re still planning the design.
I help clients work through layouts, materials and the details that contractors will need later. I communicate with the people involved, follow up on selections and address questions as the work moves forward.
My role is to look ahead. If we choose a fixture, I want to know whether it fits the plan and when it needs to arrive. If we change a layout, I want to understand what that means for lighting, plumbing and cabinetry.
A renovation rarely goes exactly as planned. When something changes, having someone who knows the full design helps us make the next decision with confidence.
“We didn’t think about that.”
… can become an expensive sentence during a renovation.
You might discover that the electrical work is complete, but no one finalized the furniture layout and it will not work with the . Or the cabinets are on order, but the appliance specifications have changed. Perhaps you love a tile that won’t arrive in time for installation.
Renovation of existing homes can always surprise us once construction begins. But we can make many of the important decisions early, when there’s time to consider the options. That’s why I encourage Connecticut homeowners to bring their design team into the conversation before construction starts.
Thoughtful planning can eliminate many mistakes.
When you make important decisions early, you have time to choose what you actually like. Wait until construction needs an answer, and you may end up paying more for rush shipping or settling for whatever is available.
Homeowners often hire a designer because they want professional guidance on how the finished space should look. What they don’t always anticipate is how valuable it can be to have help managing the number of decisions along the way.
Most of our clients have careers, families and responsibilities that don’t stop because their kitchen is under construction. But you shouldn’t have to spend every day tracking deliveries, passing messages between trades or figuring out how one change affects five others.
Clear project management gives you a way to stay involved without carrying every moving part yourself.
A beautiful design has to work in the space your contractor is building. And a practical construction decision still needs to support the home you want to live in. This is one of the reasons ASR works in both design and renovation/construction project management.
A construction decision can affect design.
A design decision can affect construction.
I like to keep those conversations connected. The homeowner, designer, contractor, trades and vendors all need to understand the goal and communicate when something changes.
That collaboration is especially valuable on kitchen renovations, whole-home renovations and additions, where so many details depend on one another.
Interestingly, successful project management can be almost invisible. You may never know about the phone call we make to prevent the wrong item from being installed. You may not see the conversation that clarified a detail before it became a problem. You may never realize how many steps happened between approving a selection and seeing it beautifully installed.
That’s okay.

I love the finished photographs as much as anyone. But the photographs aren’t the whole story. However, behind every successful renovation are drawings, measurements, conversations, schedules, selections, revisions, site decisions and hundreds of details that had to come together in the correct order.
That work matters.
At ASR Interior Designs, our goal isn’t simply to design a beautiful finished room. It’s to help guide the journey from the first idea through renovation, construction and completion.
Because when you’re investing significantly in your home, you shouldn’t have to choose between beautiful design and an organized process.
You deserve both.
Until next time,
♡ Anna
